School Based Options

An Australian School Based Apprenticeship (ASBA) or Traineeship offers students enrolled in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) the option of combining part-time employment, school and training enabling them to gain a nationally accredited qualification at Certificate II, III or IV level and a head start to work.

Australian School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are open to students 15 years and over who are permanent residents of Australia.

A typical ASBA program involves:

  • Part-time employment for a minimum of 13 hours per week (averaged) including training
  • Scheduled release of the student from secondary school to meet the vocational requirements
  • Continued study at secondary school 3 – 4 days a week to complete other VCE/VCAL units
  • Competency based learning and assessment (note: additional examinations are not required)
