An Australian School Based Apprenticeship (ASBA) or Traineeship offers students enrolled in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) the option of combining part-time employment, school and training enabling them to gain a nationally accredited qualification at Certificate II, III or IV level and a head start to work.
Australian School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are open to students 15 years and over who are permanent residents of Australia.
A typical ASBA program involves:
- Part-time employment for a minimum of 13 hours per week (averaged) including training
- Scheduled release of the student from secondary school to meet the vocational requirements
- Continued study at secondary school 3 – 4 days a week to complete other VCE/VCAL units
- Competency based learning and assessment (note: additional examinations are not required)
