We are very excited to announce the winners of our Awards for Excellence.
Apprentice of the Year
Name: Daniel Langley
Qualification: Certificate III in Commercial Cookery
Employer: Great Ocean Road Brewhouse
Daniel started out with the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse as a ‘dishwasher’, then moved onto a kitchen hand role and is now completing his apprenticeship in Commercial Cookery. Daniel has had minimal support from the outside world, with no financial help from anyone, no car and has had to travel 3 hours by bus to school from Apollo Bay. Daniel has learnt a great deal whilst being employed with the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse, gaining many skills along the way. Through his apprenticeship Daniel has grown in confidence and is proud of what he has achieved so far.
We, at Apprenticeships Matter, are all too aware of how hard it is to get any young person through an apprenticeship in this present day so we highly commend Daniel for his ongoing dedication and commitment to his apprenticeship. It is because of this that Daniel was awarded ‘Apprentice of the year’ for 2018.
Trainee of the Year
Name: Sarah Mattsson
Qualification: Certificate III in Business Administration (Legal)
Employer: Red Door Conveyancing
Sarah commenced employment with Red Door Conveyancing as a shy, softly spoken 19 year old, however if you walked into the office today, you wouldn’t believe it was the same girl. In this last year, she has exceeded all the staff’s expectations.
Sarah’s greatest qualities are her tenacity, pro-activity and positive attitude. Sarah has approached every task with the intent of wanting to learn and build on her skills. This is evident in the many processes she has improved and made more efficient in the office. She is always smiling and has impeccable customer service. Sarah is extremely hard working and is very quickly picking up the career of conveyancing. Her attention to detail, attitude and mindset are well beyond her years. It was evident early on how much of an asset Sarah is to the team at Red Door Conveyancing, congratulations on being awarded ‘Trainee of the year’ for 2018 Sarah.
Employer of the Year
Owner/Director: Steven Hedger
Hedger Constructions Pty Ltd
Steven Hedger is the Owner/Director of Hedger Constructions Pty. Ltd and over his 20 years in business, has maintained a commitment to training apprentices both through his local area in Alexandra and the wider Murrindindi Shire, more recently branding into metropolitan Melbourne. Hedger Constructions apprentices have been recognised through both State and National awards and the company has received awards from the MBAV for its outstanding contribution to the training of both young and mature age apprentices.
Hedger Constructions has employed and trained apprentices in carpentry and painting, importantly employing both male and females. Hedger Constructions supports its apprentices by paying student fees, subsidising equipment, providing specialised studies and access to a variety of programs.
The company conducts constant reviews of apprentice performance to provide both positive and constructive critical assessments of the apprentices and they are given training in all aspects of the industry from set out right through to turn of key. Steven aims to produce well rounded apprentices who can become fully aware of the key components of the construction industry. By doing this, like many existing employees, Steven believes they will grow into not only skilled carpenters but progress to leadership roles such as site supervisors.
Currently, Hedger Constructions employs ten Certificate III Carpentry apprentices with another two having just graduated.
It is for this continued commitment over many years to training young people in the construction industry that Steven and his team at Hedger Constructions have been awarded ‘Employer of the Year’ for 2018.
